When someone says the name, Frank Lloyd Wright, almost everyone would say “Oh I’ve heard of him!” I’d even bet that if you placed his work in a lineup of other notable architects, most everyone could point out his and get it Wright!

Frank Lloyd Wright was a rock star in the world of American architecture. Wright designed more than 1,000 projects and completed 500 of those works. One masterpiece of many is “La Miniatura” house. Built in 1923, it is definitely one of a kind.

His style is very recognizable with his use of vivd coloring, elongated forms, and unique subject matter. They selected a suit style and the fabric they desired from large catalogs of men's fashions. I’ve become addicted to tailgating and the incredible eats that are created. With the ultimate football game just days away, I thought I better give you guys something to savor with a nice cold beer and a Super Bowl game……

Hoagie Dip

Ingredients

• 1 medium onion
• 1/2 cup pickled mild banana peppers
• 1/2 head iceberg lettuce
• 1 large tomato, halved and seeded
• 1/4 pound deli-sliced genoa salami
• 1/4 pound deli-sliced ham
• 1/4 pound deli-sliced prosciutto
• 1/4 pound deli-sliced roast turkey
• 1/4 pound deli-sliced provolone cheese
• 1/2 cup mayonnaise
• 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 teaspoon dried oregano
• 1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil
• 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
• 1 10-to-12-inch round loaf Italian bread or Sourdough
• 8 hoagie rolls, cut into pieces, for dipping

Directions

Chop the onion, lettuce and tomato into bite-size pieces. Dice the meats and cheese.

Combine the chopped vegetables, meats, and cheese in a large bowl. Add the mayonnaise, olive oil, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes stirring until everything is mixed thoroughly and tasty. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Carve out the center of the bread loaf to make a bowl (don't cut through the bottom) and cut the scraps into bite-size pieces. Serve the hoagie dip in the bread bowl, with the extra bread and hoagie rolls to scoop it up.

Factory Shoppin'!

Now that I have been scouring the city for a new place to dwell, of course I’ve been doing a lot of “visual” rearranging to give my new abode that just perfect Reynolds Still vibe. Of course I will need lots of props to scatter throughout my space that will keep all those invited guests visually entertained. I’ve been window shopping and found several things at Factory 20 that will make just the perfect conversation piece.

Belgian 1930's industrial hand forged floor lamps. Perfect lighting for bedside reading.

No. 3

Vintage canvas leather hoisting sachel. I'm thinking the sachel would make a nice pot cover for a large indoor plant.

No. 4

Vintage industrial screen partition made of wood and iron. LOVE this piece and think it is perfect for a room divider in an open floor plan.

No. 5

Antique early electric Edison lightbulb collection. A nice collection to be seen across a fireplace mantel.

No. 6

Primitive wall partition wood with metal accent room divider. I would use these doors to replace closet doors in the master bedroom or pantry doors. I like replacing doors with vintage. It's an easy conversation piece.

Vintage student chemistry atom models. Great color to add randomly to a display shelf or hang them on a large wall for a unique art piece.

Vintage marching band base drum. The ULTIMATE man instrument or is that the tuba? I would flip the drum on it's side, top it with glass and make a handsome coffee table.

Antique Kovacs plywood table lamp. Replace the shade and I promise, you'll have a lamp that is definitely a one of a kind.

Reynolds Still Favorite! Vintage talking machine horns. A very masculine visual as is for your bookshelf.

Vintage Hammond industrial wall clock. Great timepiece for that urban, modern kitchen.

Vintage victorian iron haberdashery clothier's rounder. The living spaces that I've looked at have limited closet space. This is a perfect piece that is not only practical but very visual to make an artistic statement!

From an early age of book collecting, my purpose for thumbing thru a good book was not to be carried away by the words. Winning the 2010 Best New Menswear Designer in America pretty much lets you know that this guy is the bomb diggity! What I like most about Mr. Reid’s designs is that it has a vintage vibe to its fashion. The bow tie and hankie represent the diversity of the Reynolds Still man.

Captain Morgan for me please!

One of the most popular drinks around, Captain Morgan and Coke has been a Reynolds Still favorite this past season. CM is perfectly aged and enhanced with special fruit flavors, spices and a slight hint of vanilla. Deliciously different and exceptionally smooth, Captain Morgan Spiced Rum has a character as unforgettable as The Captain himself!

Okay, this is my all time favorite of the year. It is a mad sprint to the laptop every morning to see if Gentleman James has posted anything new and exciting for us all to read. The New Victorian Ruralist is an amazing blog that produces incredible visuals and informative exposure of what’s HOT and what’s NOT. He’s in the “know” on what tomorrow’s trends are going to be, so take it from me, we should all worship the ground the Ruralist floats above! I’m not worthy!!!

You couldn’t go to any restaurant this past season without finding the “adult” version of macaroni and cheese. Who doesn’t like a good mac and cheese? It is such a diverse comfort food with a 1,001 ways to make it. Reynolds Still created one of the BEST recipes this year and hoped that everyone got an opportunity to sample my delectable tongue teaser. Salute!

Another HOT trend this past season is the revitalization of lofty building spaces. There are many attributes that reference masculine appeal: exposed brick, wood floors, and open spaces. I am in the process of looking for just that type of abode. When I do, you are ALL invited to my open house pajama party!

Chesterfield sofa

There are few things in this world that exemplifies nothing but MAN-appeal! The Chesterfield is just that. It represents strong definition, bold expression, and is masculine in appearance. The Earl of Chesterfield undeniably had an eye for great design.

Swiss Army Blankets

I think we are all guilty of having a blankie at one time or another. Though the original version may be hard to come by, the popular 1940’s blankets are now being reproduced by select designers. Comfy and warm, this manly blankie is a definite must have for any fashion conscious snoozer.

It’s an improvised family album collecting vintage photo cards. I always make certain to have a great story to tell whenever someone asks me about who the guy is in the cards I collect. I display them with much pride and creativity knowing that that guy in the picture was once a Reynolds Still.

Once considered the King of Cool, Steve McQueen is still making a notable impact on the style of every man today. He’s been mentioned all over the blogosphere this past season and Reynolds Still has referenced him many times. Take note of his approach fellas because he’s someone we should all emulate! Bigger Isn’t Always Better…

Sometimes the best things in life come in small packages. Take for instance this 500 square foot apartment. Using a neutral color pallet and creative ideas, this diminutive living space becomes larger than life! The contemporary loft is comfortably accommodating with an open layout and almost no space barriers. The interior is stylish and simple reflecting a masculine point of view.

A Mess of Somethin’!

Now and again it takes just a little mess of somethin’ to do a body good!

A Mess of Somethin’

4 good size red potatoes
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium yellow onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, add potatoes, and cook until tender but still firm. This will take approximately 15 minutes. Drain the potatoes, let cool, and cut into 1/2 inch cubes (or slice to preference). In a large skillet heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium high heat adding the onion and bell pepper. Stirring often, the onions and peppers should cook soft within approximately 5 minutes. Transfer to a plate and set aside.

Pour remaining 2 tablespoons of oil into the skillet and turn heat to medium-high. Add potatoes, salt and black pepper. The potatoes should cook to a crisp brown stirring occasionally; about 10 minutes. Add the cooked onions and peppers cooking for another minute. Serve hot.

A Mess of Somethin’ has always been a Reynolds Still favorite and my guess is a comfort food most everyone has enjoyed many a time.

Recently I attended a social gathering where I was introduced to and photographed with the ever so sweet and lovely Rachel McAdams. Most everyone knows who this movie star is and I am no exception. She is as breathtaking in person as she is on the silver screen.

Her motion picture credits are numerous and the most noteworthy is the film The Notebook.

When I was asked to take a photograph with her, of course I did not hesitate to oblige. As I walked towards where she was standing, my demeanor as a gentleman was calm, cool and collected. Why, because I am Reynolds Still…..the guy who lives by a gentleman’s standard of living of course!!! Once I came face to face with this beautiful young woman and she extended her hand to be shaken, I lost all composure. As I held her hand, I began to insert foot into mouth. Speaking nothing of any worth, my biggest mistake was to say that the ONLY movie I’ve seen of hers was Love Letters. Looking at me with one of those tilted heads of confusion, I realized that the movie I meant to refer to was THE NOTEBOOK! Blah, blah, blah…..

Scratching the Surface…

Sometimes called street art, reverse graffiti, or an architectural sculpture…whatever the case, Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto’s vision is fascinating beyond words. Interested in street art since the age of 13, Alexandre has taken up scratching faces into the facades of buildings all around the world. His architectural embellishments are hauntingly beautiful and his creativity will leave you breathless.

Farto has traveled all over Europe and even into the US to compose and chip away his portrait series. You can find his faces in Moscow, Italy, London, Portugal and NYC.

Though some of the portraits are large in scale taking over an entire building façade, others are small and hardly noticeable like a ghost image playing tricks on the eye.

For his scratched portrait series called “Scratching the Surface”, Alexandra first paints the wall with his subject using paint as a guide for the removal process then using jackhammers, picks, hammers and his own hands to chip and peel back the plaster from the concrete wall. What remains is a relief of the face and a wonderful contrast between the smooth facade of the building and the ruble behind it.

I Wanna Be Lars Bolander!

What little I know about Scandinavian interiors is simplistic, clean lines and washed white. It’s has been a much respected point of view in the world of interiors since its introduction in the 1950’s but not much aligned with the Reynolds Still man. Then, I was introduced to Lars Bolander and now, I have an entirely new respect for the Scandinavian influence.

A distinguished and well respected designer, born in Sweden, Mr. Bolander is known for bringing the world to Scandinavian design. A Gentleman's Comfort Food!

I’ve always been a BIG fan of the Mac and Cheese so today when treating myself with a little not so good for you tailgating feast, I decided to create my own recipe for a MANly Macaroni and Cheese. A Reynolds Still exclusive!

Reynolds Still Chorizo Mac and Cheese

1 Lb. Elbow Macaroni

6 cups water

1 Tbsp. Sea Salt

5 oz. Pork Chorizo (Cacique)

1 Tbsp Olive Oil

6 Tbsp. Butter

½ Cup Flour

2 Cups Warmed Half and Half

2 Cups Warmed Milk

2 Cups Shredded Sharp Cheddar

16 oz Velveeta 2 % Milk Processed Cheese

1 Tbsp Ground Mustard

1 Tbsp Worcestershire

Salt and Pepper to taste

½ cup Seasoned Bread crumbs

½ cup Shredded Parmesan Cheese

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large pot of boiling water, add salt and cook the pasta to al dente.

While the pasta and chorizo are cooking, in a separate pot melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and slowly add the warm milk, Worcestershire, ground mustard, salt/pepper, sharp cheddar and processed cheeses whisking until well blended. Add cooked chorizo sausage and al dente macaroni mixing thoroughly with béchamel cheese sauce.

Add mixture to 9 x 13 baking dish topping with seasoned bread crumbs and parmesan cheese.

Bake for 30 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Remove from oven and rest for five minutes before serving.

Known for her steamrolling, brassy vocals, the blues mama is winner of four Grammys and seventeen Blues Music Awards. Miss James has also been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, and the Grammy Hall of Fame in both 1999 and 2008. One of my all time favorite compilations is Etta James GOLD. It has 36 of her very best. If you ever want to experience the blues, this CD will break your heart…..in a good way! Back to School!

Can you believe it, 20 some odd years later, Reynolds Still is GOING BACK TO SCHOOL! I’m excited as well as a bit apprehensive. None the less, it’s a journey I’m looking forward to and plan to share it with you all. The hometown college I am attending has incredible architecture with much history attached. The university’s library is housed inside La Quinta Mansion. This 32 room Spanish style mansion was built in the 1930’s for H.V. Foster, the richest man west of the Mississippi as the story is told. The interior showcases the original terra cotta tiled floors and hand painted ceilings. Its exterior is as breathtaking. Mr. Foster spared no expense when building his family home.

Emasculating Picture Hangers!

Clever of some woMAN for coming up with the idea to use a man’s trouser hangers to hang a PHO-TOE! Think about it, it’s an ingenious way to suspend photographs of loved ones or party banners of some sort giving it that creative old school vibe. Even though I’d like to tip my hat to the thinking out of the box originator of this idea, it still leaves me feeling a bit emasculated!

Traveling thru history of mankind, a man’s clothing was THE distinguishing trademark separating men from any other creature. Pants were the one iconic piece of clothing that represented masculinity and was respectfully treated as such! Therefore, thankful are we for the invention of the gentleman’s pant hanger.

The Setwell pant hanger was patented on April 24th, 1934 by F.K. Deknatel. The Setwell was a definite closet must have for any man of style back in the day. Even though numerous replicas have been produced and used properly throughout the years, one only has to compare new to old to see how superior the Setwell hanger remains.

So with all that useless bit of information shared, it’s safe to say as trends come and go like hanging photographs with pant hangers, it’s a well-hung pair of trousers that will always be the standard by which MANkind is judged.
